Career Mapping: Quiz Style

Even as a senior in college, I sometimes find myself wondering about my future and if i've chosen the correct path or major for myself. I wish it was as easy as taking a career placement quiz to find my calling.

If you sometimes find yourself killing time on your Facebook timeline doing BuzzFeed quizzes that tell you which Glee character you are, etc. then take the time out to take this CFA quiz that will tell you more about what type of career is best for you.

Even though this quiz is marketed more towards careers in finance, I took it and actually found peace within my major. My results said I am geared towards client relationship management, marketing or sales. Although my major is journalism, my focus within my major is focused on public relations and advertising. I loved seeing those results and having my future and dreams reassured.

More information on how this quiz works and why CFA developed this to help students:

How does it work?
The quiz was developed in partnership between CFA Institute and our student marketing agency. The team included experts who have assisted global businesses in designing competency frameworks, assessment tools and robust scoring mechanisms for their graduate recruitment. Initially job descriptions were drafted for each career option and then key characteristics identified for each one. Once these characteristics were in place across the career options, a core competency framework was developed to encapsulate the following:

•   Adaptability to change/Flexibility
  
•   Motivation
  
•   Communication
  
•   Teamwork/interpersonal
  
•   Analytical
  
•   Leadership
  
•   Commercial awareness
  
•   Decision making/problem solving
  

From this, a set of questions was developed to help determine an individual’s career preferences. As there are only 3 answers a judgment call had to be made as to which category the career option fell into. Sometimes the career option is suited to more than one answer so we worked to make the answers distinct without being mutually exclusive. Once the questions and answers were complete, a weighting tool was developed with a scale of 0, 5, 10. Students can therefore get a maximum of 100 points. To an extent the weighting is subjective as we have weighted a Lawyer more in favor of being analytical than visionary but clearly there are lawyers who are visionary or perhaps both visionary and analytical. The tool is intended to be a starting point for students to discover the career options available, rather than a definitive recommendation.
